HISTORY

A lonely woman wishing for a child to call her own is given a seed to plant, and as the flower blooms the next day, a girl "no larger than a thumb" is revealed. The woman named the girl Thumbelina, and raises her as her own daughter. Thumbelina spent the majority of her time at home, playing with her mother's farm animals and playing make-pretend.

However, behind her cheerful exterior is an insecure young woman. One night while her mother is telling stories, Thumbelina asks if there are any stories about "little people." Her mother says there are, and begins to tell a tale about fairies. Thumbelina longs to find the kind of love her mother tells stories of, but she's afraid that she's the only person her size in the world.

Later, at bed time, she asks her mother to set her beside the fairy book, and her mother obliges. As Thumbelina plays make-pretend and begins to sing, the fairy prince is enchanted by her voice and the two meet for the first time and fall in love during a ride on his bumble bee. He promises to return the next morning and introduce her to his parents, but during the night she is stolen by Mrs. Toad, whose son was taken by her during the bumble bee ride.

When Thumbelina awakens, she's far from home and Mrs. Toad insists that she should join her and her family and become a star. Thumbelina resists at first, but Mrs. Toad eventually convinces her. Thumbelina becomes disenchanted when Mrs. Toad declares that she will also be marrying her son, Grundel. She protests, but is leftto fend for herself as the family leaves to attend to another affair.

Upset, Thumbelina cries out for help and is rescues by a swallow named Jacquimo, who vows to help her find her Prince Cornelius. In her time of disappointment and self-doubt, he also helps encourage her to "follow her heart" and continue to try to find her way home. She very nearly makes it back, but is sidetracked by Berkley Beetle, who steals her and forces her to perform in his Beetle Ball. He later kicks her out and accuses her of being "too ugly."

Her confidence shot once again, she sits alone, but Jacquimo once more comes to comfort her. After a night's rest, Jacquimo leaves to search for Cornelius once more, and Thumbelina continues to search for home. Cornelius' parents are unable to delay the Winter Frost any more (Cornelius had requested they delay it as long as possible to allow him time to search for her,) and Thumbelina is caught in the snow. Cold, inadequately dressed, and feeling hopeless, she takes refuge in a shoe and is rescued by Mrs. Fieldmouse.

After waking, Mrs. Fieldmouse tells her that Cornelius is dead, and it is then that Thumbelina's personality begins to change. She becomes depressed and hopeless. Everything she'd been trying to do failed. Her love was dead, and she was still so far from home. During a visit to Mr. Mole, Thumbelina sings a sad song for him and they later take a walk in his tunnels, where she finds Jacquimo on the brink of death. She promises to return later, and leaves with Mrs. Fieldmouse.

At Mrs. Fieldmouse's place, Thumbelina is convinced to marry Mr. Mole and she eventually accepts, having given up all hope of finding both her love and her home. She knows she will need someone to take care or her.

Later, she sneaks out to visit Jacquimo, as promised, and is happy to find that he's still alive. She removes a thorn from his wing, but before she has the time to tell him that Cornelius is dead, Jacquimo leaves once more to fulfill his promise, and Thumbelina collapses, heartbroken.
